Creative Writing Workshop - Online
Award winning playwright Jack Canfora will offer a six-week course on all aspects of creative writing, encompassing plays, screenplays, television scripts, poetry, and fiction. We will talk about and see examples of some classics in different genres and, more crucially, what makes them classics. We will approach writing as both a serious craft from which to learn and apply skills, as well as a way to express your unique voice and thoughts.
Writers of all levels of experience are welcome. Whether you’re looking to finely polish an already close to finished piece, or have never written creatively before but have always wanted to give it a try, there will be a home for you here.

How to Write & Read Anything
This class will be focused on learning how to read and write in a variety of different formats and contexts, specifically preparing the high school junior or senior for college. This curriculum will prepare a student for university expectations, including a strong grammar and citations overview, analytical writing (topic/evidence/analysis) and introspective personal essaying. Readings and discussions will include techniques for breaking down dense fiction and literature, analyzing long- and short-form journalism, annotating historical primary sources and selecting evidence to prove your argument. Class will be capped at 10 and include daily grammar quizzes and blog/journal assignments. Every student will receive personal feedback sessions with the instructor to discuss their progress as well as their goals as a writer and student.
Time: Tue & Thu 12:30pm – 2pm

AP Literature Boot Camp
A teacher of Advanced Placement Literature for over 15 years, instructor Jack Canfora will give a fast but thorough (and possibly even fun) tour through not only the AP Literature Exam, but how to read, analyze (and perhaps even enjoy) the kind of literature the test will have to offer. In a six -week course, Jack will help you overcome any fears of such potentially terrifying subjects such as poetry and Shakespeare. And for those of you who already have a love of literature, we will do a deep dive into the craft of “close reading” that is the backbone of the AP Lit Exam.

The Art of Film
This six-week seminar will explore the world of film as an art form. Through the works of directors like Paul Thomas Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee and others, students will learn about the unique way film can be used to expand social consciousness and explore the human condition. The course will introduce film techniques that will allow students to “read” a film, much like they might great literature.
Students will view one required film each week independently in preparation for discussion, and they will write short responses on a subject of their choice regarding that week’s film. The feedback they receive will aim to help them sharpen their critical thinking and writing skills and prepare them for college-level work.
